Angles We Misheard (While High) [[Again]] By Bill Butler For Flute Ensemble
Years ago, after a Flute Choir rehearsal, I sat down in front of my better half’s keyboard and just started “noodling around” with some of the holiday music we had been reading. Out of the blue I had a revelation “to not pay too much attention to the original piece of music! a this idea of “playing around” with the melodies just happened. Unlike arranging, where you want to maintain harmony, rhythm, etc., this could be free of the original, subject to the moment and “fun”. Then came the philosophy from my Jazz Improv instructor of “Learn it and forget it”. Over the years we listen to a lot of different music that our brain stores, and if you are lucky, recall at the necessary time!
For the title, I thought of a Mel Brooks scene where Moses has returned to the people with three tablets of the 15 . . . . . . . Oops, one drops and breaks . . .the 10 commandments! Eureka! We Misheard the Angels.
Play this piece with fun in mind. Keep it moving, no drudgery. A good march tempo.
